Susan's Homestay-Near Convoy

San Diego (Tierrasanta)

Homestay in San Diego, United States

I prefer no meals but can be a little flexible. I have been hosting students for 20+ years but it's 3 years since I enjoyed having a student. I have learned to cook a little Japanese food,Chinese food, Mexican food, Italian food, and of course many American styles. And I love to Barbecue chicken, pork, fish and beef outside. When students make friends at school and develop a social life it is normal to go out after school or on weekends to eat at restaurants with their friends and explore San Diego. So my price of $865 is no meals. Also I require a Security Depoist of $500 which we can discuss. The deposit is fully refundable if you give me 4 weeks notice before move out, and leave your space & the bath clean with no damage. But from time to time I will invite you to share a meals as my guest. I usually have two adults, sometime US soldiers, living with me but if I have a student only one other person who will share a bath with that student except if someone has not yet moved out. then it is temporary. My community of Tierrasanta is upscale, very nice, quiet, safe, clean with educated residents. Tierrasanta library is one block and will re open after the remodel end of this year. We have a large recreation center 4 blocks from my home with baseball, basketball, tennis, swimming pools and a student is welcome to borrow my bicycle or walk. Everything at the recreation center is free except swimming pools. If a student borrows my bike they are responsibile should the bike get stolen or damaged and I will collect a deposit on the bike.

The Tierrasanta shuttle bus comes once each hour on weekdays but no longer runs on weekends. Transportation often includes a mixture of the shuttle bus, walking and trolley. In emergencies I am always willing to pick up a student at the trolley station or school to assure their safety but I do ask for a small gasoline contribution(usually $3).

My bedrooms have optional cable, wifi, so if desired you can watch TV on the internet. I do have one older style TV that can be connected in the students room but if you want regular cable TV service the cable box must be rented from the cable company which is $10 each month.

Many students like to get a California drivers license, I can help but they have an easier time learning to drive here if they arrive with an International Drivers License. They must take a written exam which they can access the California Drivers manual my contact page and its available in many languages. After passing the written exam they can drive but only with another licensed driver in the car. They usually have a few months to practice then take the driving test with instructor in the car.

The City Shuttle bus #25 stops 5 minutes from my home and goes to Ruffin Rd, 3 minutes walk to National University Spectrum campus. That bus only runs Monday through Friday. The southbound bus goes directly to Mesa College but passes CalAlum along the way, then onto the Fashion Valley trolley station. The northbound bus goes to Complex drive, then you can walk to Convoy with many many Asian restaurants and karaoke, or take a transfer bus to the trolley or somewhere else. My home is a ten minute drive in a car to USD, SDSU and Kearny Mesa(Convoy) and 16 minutes drive to UCSD. The Trolley is not far, to reach the trolley station they can take the shuttle bus, then walk about 1/2 mile to the station or ride the bike. Bicycles are allowed on San Diego buses and the trolley.

I enjoy students who always clean up, keep the shared bathroom clean and wash their dishes. My first San Diego State University BA is in english so I can also help students polish their language skills. I am also semi-fluent in Spanish.I very much enjoy the students and try to be a good Host Mom. Your friends are welcome to stay the night in your room occasionally but pleae, not all weekend every weekend.

If students like to cook they may cook any time but must clean up all dishes , stove and floor after cooking. If the weather is really hot outside we limit our cooking as it heats up the house, but we can use the BBQ any time. When the other housemate moves out the student will eventually have their own small refrigerator and freezer.
